The Rembrandt House Kicks Off Rembrandt Year with the Rembrandt Festival

On 2 February Jodenbreestraat will be kicking off the street festival.

2019 is the 350th anniversary of Rembrandt’s death. The Rembrandt House Museum is organizing Amsterdam’s start of the Rembrandt and the 17th century national theme year. The house in Jodenbreestraat was the centre of Rembrandt’s success. He lived and worked there for almost twenty years, from 1639 to 1658.

Rembrandt’s life and work is being celebrated by the Rembrandt Festival in Jodenbreestraat, free and accessible to everyone. On 2 February 2019 from Midday to 9 p.m. you can ‘meet Rembrandt in the street’ during a street festival with artistic odes to the Dutch master.

NOS is making the programme ‘NOS: Opening Rembrandtjaar’, which will be broadcast on 2 February from 9.35 p.m. to 10.20 p.m. on NPO1, especially for this occasion.

Gold Frames
The street will be submerged in gold with dozens of gold frames. If you get closer to them you will find that the frames contain 350 interesting and entertaining facts about Rembrandt and his time, in today’s context. This will make the street the ideal spot for a selfie with a golden edge: can you make as beautiful a ‘portrait’ as Rembrandt did?

Performances by Young Talent
Discover today’s creative and promising talent during performances by students from Amsterdam’s Academy for Theatre and Dance and from the Conservatorium. From monologues to modern dance: Rembrandt still inspires.

Copy ‘The Night Watch’ Together
If you are inspired by Rembrandt you can set to work on ‘The Night Watch’. Visitors to the Rembrandt Festival in Jodenbreestraat can have a go at painting the famous masterpiece themselves. The replica will be three metres wide and two metres high, and everyone can join in!

NOS Talks to Celebrities and Experts about Rembrandt
In a special programme to be aired by NOS about the festival, Annechien Steenhuizen will be talking to museum directors Lidewij de Koekkoek (The Rembrandt House Museum) and Taco Dibbits (Rijksmuseum), who will reflect on Rembrandt’s timeless impact. Other guests including the artist Marco Borsato, the author Simone van der Vlugt and the photographer Carla van de Puttelaar will also discuss how Rembrandt lives on as a source of inspiration for them. The special ‘NOS: opening Rembrandtjaar’ can be watched on NPO1 on 2 February from 9.35 p.m. to 10.20 p.m
